چکیده

This paper addresses the preliminary design of a spaceborne monocular vision-based navigation system for on-orbit-servicing and formation-flying applications. The aim is to estimate the pose of a passive space resident object using its known three-dimensional model and single low-resolution two-dimensional images collected on-board the active spacecraft. In contrast to previous work, no supportive means are available on the target satellite (e.g., light emitting diodes) and no a-priori knowledge of the relative position and attitude is available (i.e., lost-in-space scenario). Three fundamental mechanisms – perceptual organization, true perspective projection, and random sample consensus – are exploited to their full extent to overcome the limitations of monocular passive optical navigation in space. The preliminary design is conducted and validated making use of actual images collected in the frame of the PRISMA mission at about 700 km altitude and 10 m inter-spacecraft separation.

Vision-based Detection and Tracking for Space Navigation

This paper focuses on navigation issues for space autonomous, uncooperative rendezvous with targets such as satellites, space vehicles or debris. In order to fully localize, using a vision sensor, a chaser spacecraft with respect to a target spacecraft or debris, a visual model-based detection and tracking technique is proposed. Our tracking approach processes complete 3D models of complex obje...

Visual Inspection System for Autonomous Robotic On-Orbit Satellite Servicing

Nowadays, within the space robotics, there is a substantial interest in achieving on-orbit satellite servicing operations autonomously. On-orbit servicing (OOS) requires ability to rendezvous and dock by an unmanned spacecraft minimizing human intervention. This paper is presented like a step in this course. In RoboticsLab, we have developed the RISANAR testbed to simulate scenarios of autonomo...

Spacecraft Pose Estimation using Principal Component Analysis and a Monocular Camera

The method of Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is widely used in statistical data analysis for engineering and the sciences. It is an effective tool for reducing the dimensionality of datasets while retaining majority of the data information. This paper explores the method of using PCA for spacecraft pose estimation for the purpose of proximity operations, and adapts a novel kernel based PCA...

Efficient Closed-Loop Detection and Pose Estimation for Vision-Only Relative Localization in Space with A Cooperative Target

An integrated processing pipeline is presented for relative pose estimation of vision-only cooperative localization between two vehicles with unknown relative motion. The motivating scenario is that of proximity operations between two spacecraft when the target spacecraft has a special target pattern and the chase spacecraft is navigating using only a monocular visual sensor. The only prior inf...

Real-Time Dynamic Pose Estimation Systems in Space: Lessons Learned for System Design and Performance Evaluation

Real-time pose estimation systems are fundamentally difficult to evaluate. Pose estimation performance is a function of the object geometry, environmental conditions, line of sight, sensor characteristics, algorithm characteristics, and computational platform. This paper presents lessons learned from Neptec’s two operational space systems for real-time dynamic pose estimation: the Space Vision ...
